In preparation for the New Year, lets take a moment to reflect on which conversations went well (and which didn’t) so we can become more thoughtful and impactful communicators.

 

As an OT, I often engage in ‘reflective practice’. In keeping with a similar approach, ask yourself these important questions – regardless of where you are in your communication journey.

 

1. Which conversations this past year stand out to you and why?

 

Think of 3 conversations this past year which really stood out to you. Why do they stand out? Who was impacted and in what way? What was the outcome of the conversation? Take a moment to write down a few reasons why these conversations stand out.
 

2. Which conversations this year went well? 

 

Why did these conversations go well? Did you feel understood? Did you feel that you listened well? Did you build any meaningful connections? Although the conversations went well, is there anything you would do differently?

3. Which conversations didn’t go well?

 

Why didn’t they go well? Was there a moment in the conversation where the tone or energy immediately changed? Why is that? More importantly, what would you do differently?

4.  What communication tendencies did you notice about yourself this year?

 

They don’t need to be something that you would necessarily change, but simply – just be mindful of. Did you learn about your triggers or someone else’s triggers? Zoom out and write down what you’ve learned.

 

5. How do you stand out?

 

Our world keeps evolving: tools and technology have changed significantly. AI is improving. What will you do to be memorable? What are you doing to become a more effective communicator?

 

6. Lastly, what are your communication goals this year?

 

What are you going to do to get there? Do you have a mentor or a coach? Which resources can you access to reach your goals?
